Chapter 25: The Ferry
"Where?" I said.
He didn't answer right away.
He looked down 46th Street toward the river, where the sky was still black.
"You told me on the back deck that you'd know when," he said. "I'm not deciding it. I'm asking if it's now."
I thought about the urn on the kitchen table on Bank Street.
The dent in the lid. Three years on a mantel in Woodside, next to a clock.
"Not today," I said. "We've got a show tonight and two tomorrow. Sunday."
"Sunday."
"The first boat. Before the sun's up. And not just us."
"Who?"
"Everybody who knew him."
He nodded.
"Will you ask them, or will I?"
I laughed. It came out tired and wet.
"I'll ask them," I said. "You can buy the coffee."
On Sunday, April 12, at 5:40 in the morning, the Whitehall terminal was nearly empty.
A cleaner was pushing a mop. Two nurses in scrubs drank coffee by the window.
A man was asleep across three plastic seats.
And the crew of The Last Ferry, in a clump by the doors, holding paper cups.
