Chapter 16: Not a Mistake
"It's mine," I said.
My mother's hand stayed in the air, with the yellow strap hanging from her fingers.
"I wore it at the lake yesterday, and I wore Devin's shirt to bed," I said. "I've been sleeping with him since last Friday."
Nobody moved in the kitchen.
The coffeemaker gurgled, and it was the loudest sound I'd ever heard.
Gordon had come to the doorway at some point, a mug in his hand, and now he made a small noise through his nose.
"Well," he said. "That's unfortunate."
"Gordon," my mother said, without turning.
"I'm only saying, Renee, that it explains the voicemail."
"What voicemail?" I said.
"The one your stepfather left my lawyer's office last night." Gordon smiled with every one of his teeth. "A very noble message. I'm sure it was inspired."
I looked at Devin.
He hadn't moved from the counter, and his eyes were on my mother's face.
"Is that why?" my mother said to him, very quietly. "That's why you won't sign?"
"I won't sign until you tell her yourself," said Devin. "I said that. I meant it."
"She's twenty-two years old."
"I know how old she is."
"You've been my husband for three years!"
"For three years, and then for the last three months, you weren't here," said Devin. "You left. You asked me to cover for it."
My mother set the bikini top down on the table, very gently.
Then she turned to me, and her face changed.
The warmth went, and what was under it was white and sharp.
