"He told me she couldn't have children," Wynn said to the camera. "He told me the marriage was dead. I believed all of it, because I wanted to."

Joanne's phone shook in my hand.

Eleven thousand people were watching.

Dalton said, "Turn that off, Monica."

"I'm not doing anything. She is."

He grabbed for the phone, and Keith stepped between us without seeming to hurry.

"Let her finish," Keith said.

On the screen, Wynn wiped her face with her sleeve.

"I'm not asking you to like me. I know what I did. I'm telling you what he did, because I'm done being the only one who's ashamed."

She held up a second phone.

"I have forty-one voice memos from Dalton Whitlow. I kept every one, because he never wanted to put anything in writing. I'm giving them to his wife tonight."

Dalton made a sound I had never heard from him.

"She's lying," he said. "She's hysterical."

"She's standing on her own lawn," Joanne said. "Next to the house you sleep in."

I gave Joanne her phone back and took my coat off the hook.

"Monica, don't," Joanne said.

"She said tonight."

"You're eight weeks pregnant and it's one in the morning."

"Then drive me."

Keith said, "I'll drive."

Dalton followed us to the curb.

"If you go over there, I swear to God," he said.

"What will you do?" I asked him. "File for custody?"

He stopped walking.
