Chapter 15: Owners' Meeting

Claire's POV

The lounge on Wednesday night held every folding chair the building owned.

Word had gone around the thirty floors.

Neighbors filled the rows with their coats on their laps, and the man from 1802 stood at the back with his arms crossed.

I sat in the second row with Keaton on my left and Tom on my right.

Tom had on his clean blue shirt again. He held a manila folder flat on his knees and hadn't opened it.

"Whatever happens," he said, "let me do it."

"Do what?"

"Say it."

At the front, the building manager sat at a folding table with a gavel he plainly didn't know how to use.

Summer sat to his right in the lemon dress with the woman in the gray suit beside her.

Grady sat three chairs down from them, alone, in the same shirt as Monday.

The manager tapped the table.

"We're here on a petition from an owner of unit 1806."

"Ms. Eberle's counsel will speak," he added.

The woman in the gray suit stood.

"Ms. Eberle is a recorded co-owner and a pregnant resident of this building. She asks the association to confirm her right to live in 1806 undisturbed."

"Undisturbed by whom?" the man from 1802 called.

"By Mr. Radley, who has made threats."

Tom's head came up.

"I haven't said a word to her in three weeks."

"You came to the shower."

"I came with a scan," Tom said. "From her own clinic."

The woman in the suit went on as if nobody had spoken.

"She also asks that Mrs. Lindell be barred from the common areas outside her own apartment while the ownership is in dispute."

A hum ran through the rows.

Barred.

I looked at Summer.

She kept her eyes on her lap with one hand across her stomach, and I knew she'd practiced that tilt of the head.
