Chapter 24: Room 520, Again
The envelope held a printed confirmation, two ferry tickets, and a note from my obstetrician that said, "Cleared to travel. Drink water."
I read the top line three times.
HALCYON ISLAND RESORT. ROOM 520. HONEYMOON SUITE. GUEST: HANNAH AUDLEY.
"I'm not asking you to marry me," Samson said. "I'd like to say that first. Not yet."
"Not yet?"
"I want to do it properly, with a ring I choose, in a room I didn't borrow."
"But I'd like to do this one right, while I'm waiting."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Nobody should get a bad memory of that place and keep it. It's yours. You paid for it."
I couldn't speak.
I put the confirmation against my chest and just stood there, in my own living room, with paint on my hands.
"Say something," he said.
"Do they have a good cake?"
He laughed with relief and pulled me into his arms.
We took the last ferry on a Friday, at thirty weeks.
The water was black and gold.
I stood at the rail in my trench coat, which no longer buttoned.
Samson's arms were around me from behind, and his chin rested on my shoulder.
The island came up out of the dusk, small and green, with the resort lit like a ship.
"Same dock," I said.
"Same dock."
"I was so happy that night, walking up it."
"I know."
"I'm happy now, too. It's a different kind."
"Better or worse?"
"It's the kind that doesn't have to hide."
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was Macy.
"Bernice resigned as foundation chair. Sorley Furniture put Ethan on 'indefinite leave.' The video has nine million views. Have fun. Don't do anything I wouldn't do. Do everything I would."
I showed it to Samson.
He read it twice, and he grinned.
