Chapter 8: The Glass

I got my coat on over my pajamas, and I could not make my hands work the zipper.

I went down the stairs one at a time with my fist on my stitches.

Garrett was awake on the porch swing, and he stood up as soon as the green door opened.

"What happened?"

"The baby's oxygen dropped. I have to go."

"I'll drive you."

"No."

"Piper, you can't drive, and I'm right here."

"Jonas is coming."

I had already called him from the stairs.

He had picked up on the first ring, awake, and said, "Nine minutes."

It was seven.

His truck pulled up with the engine running, and he got out and held the passenger door.

He looked at Garrett on my porch and didn't say anything.

I got in, and Jonas shut the door, and we drove.

Garrett's headlights stayed in the mirror the whole way.

The NICU was blue and cold, and the lamp over her box had been turned up.

A nurse was bent over her, adjusting something.

She straightened when she saw me.

"She had an apnea spell," she said. "She stopped breathing for about fifteen seconds, which preemies do. We gave her caffeine and bumped the oxygen. She's pinking up already."

"Caffeine?"

"For babies it works like a pacemaker. She's fine. She's a fighter."

I put my hand through the hole in the box.

The tiny fist took hold of my finger and held it.

I stood there and shook until Jonas put a stool behind my knees.
