Chapter 9: No Call Came In

Jonas's POV

The vending machine in the NICU lobby had one kind of tea.

I fed it three dollar bills and watched it take two of them.

I had been standing in front of that machine for four minutes without pressing a button.

I kept seeing her face when I'd laid my jacket over her shoulders.

I kept feeling the wool go still under my hands.

I was a trooper, and she was a woman whose husband had left her at my plaza.

That was all it was.

I pressed the button, and the machine made a noise and dropped a cup of hot water with a tea bag taped to the side.

I stood there anyway.

I had been a minute late on Thursday.

I'd come in off the ramp as that gray SUV pulled out from under the awning.

If I'd been sixty seconds earlier, I would have blocked the lane with my cruiser and asked a few questions.

I had run through it a hundred times in four days, and I still couldn't make the minute come out different.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was the night dispatcher at my post, a woman who had worked there longer than I had been a trooper.

I had texted her at midnight, and she had finally gotten to it.

"You asked about a stalled rental on the turnpike Thursday afternoon, westbound, near mile 140. Nothing. No calls in, no tow request, no 911, no roadside assist."

I read it twice.

Delaney had told Garrett she was alone on the shoulder, and that she couldn't breathe.
