Chapter 12: The Pickup Line
Miles's POV
By Wednesday the video had been watched more than nine hundred times, and I could tell which parents had seen it by the way they stopped talking when I walked up to the school gate.
I had come early on purpose.
Wednesday was Leigh's pickup day, but I wanted to be standing there when the doors opened.
I wanted Jamie to see me first.
It was a stupid wish.
I stood a little apart from the other parents with my hands in my pockets and my face fixed.
A woman I had known for six years looked at me, looked away, and said something to the man beside her.
Then I saw a cream blazer at the far end of the lot.
Kendra was leaning against a white car I had never seen, with her phone in her hand.
She raised it and pointed it at the crowd, then at me, and smiled.
I walked straight across the pavement to her.
"What are you doing here?" I said.
"You don't have a child at this school."
"I have a friend who does," Kendra said.
"A friend lent me this car, and I've got three days before I have to be out of his house."
"You have a funny way of treating a woman who needs help, Miles."
"Delete the post."
"The photo?" She tilted her head.
"I think the parents have a right to know who they're trusting their children with."
"Leigh kissed a man in June while she was your wife."
"I only passed it along."
Two mothers had drifted close enough to hear.
A father put his phone away and stood still.
