Chapter 8: Table Four

Leigh stayed upstairs with Jamie for forty minutes, and Kendra and I didn't speak the entire time.

When Leigh came down, she put on her grey coat, said goodnight to me, and let herself out.

She did not say a word to Kendra.

Kendra stood in my kitchen holding her phone in both hands.

"He doesn't know," she said.

"He can't know. Ellis never texts me anything but the grocery list. He leaves notes on the fridge."

"Maybe he's just angry about something else," I said.

"He said he filed," Kendra said.

"Filed what, Miles? I don't have a car in his name, I don't have a loan."

"There's only one thing to file."

She dropped into a chair at the island and put her head in her hands.

For the first time in three years, I saw her without a plan.

I would like to say that I felt sorry for her.

What I felt was that the evening had been taken out of my hands, and I wanted it back.

"You can stay at a hotel tonight," I said.

"I'll pay for it."

"I'm not going to a hotel."

She lifted her head, and her eyes were dry and bright.

"I'm going to fight for this, Miles."

"Fight for what?"

"For us. For you. She walked out of this house with nothing, and she thinks she's won."

"Your son picked you in front of her last week."

"You told me yourself."

"That's what the courts listen to."
