Chapter 10: Bridge Lights
Dee's POV
He had spread a quilt over the tar paper of his roof.
He lay down on it first and held up one arm.
"Come here," the stagehand said. "It's cold. I promise I'm not going to do anything you don't want."
"That's a terrible promise to make to me," I said.
"Why?"
"Because I'm going to want all of it."
He laughed softly, with his eyes on the sky, and I lay down against him with my back to his chest.
He pulled the other half of the quilt over us both.
It was a cool night in the middle of May, and it smelled of rain that hadn't come yet.
Below the edge of the roof the whole of Brookline sloped away in streetlights, and farther off the bridges were strung across the river in white.
I could hear a train and somebody's television and, very far away, a dog.
He was twenty-three, white, a lanky man with hands roughened from hauling lumber for the sets at Heinz Hall.
He smelled of sawdust and clean laundry.
We had split a bottle of wine on the roof over a conversation about nothing, and I had watched him not look at my legs for an hour.
It was the first time in two months that I had stopped counting.
"You're thinking," he said into my hair.
"I'm not."
"You're thinking so loud that I can hear it," he said.
"What am I thinking?"
"That you want to be in charge," he said. "And that you're tired of it."
I didn't say anything.
His arm came around my waist and pulled me back against him, and I felt that he was already hard, pressed along the small of my back through his jeans.
"Let me," he said, into my ear. "Just for tonight. Let me take my time."
