Chapter 14: My Own Bed

I had never brought a man upstairs.

Once in fifteen weeks I had brought a man home, and he had stayed in the kitchen, where the floor wiped clean.

The bedroom was different.

It had a queen bed I had bought by myself in the first month.

The headboard was black iron, with bars like a gate.

The dresser was one my mother had painted yellow in 1989.

"Nice room," the Pitt senior said from the doorway.

"Don't look at the room."

"Right," he said. "Sorry."

He was twenty-one, Indian-American, from Monroeville, with long eyelashes and a gold watch his father had given him at graduation.

He stood very straight when he was nervous.

He would be a senior in the fall, in civil engineering.

He had spent dinner telling me how a bridge decides not to fall down.

He was so earnest about cables that I took his hand over the check before the coffee came.

Now he stood in my bedroom doorway with the hall light behind him, waiting for instructions.

I had decided something in the Subaru on Monday morning.

I had decided to stop cheating at my own rule.

A rule was a rule when nothing else was in the room, and the last two men had both been a little too lovely.

Tonight was going to be what the rule was for.
