Chapter 15: Twelve Hours
The EMT had been awake for twenty hours and said so twice on the stairs.
His duplex in Carrick was six blocks from my mother's.
I had told myself that was a coincidence and not a risk.
He was twenty-three and white, born on that hill.
His buzz cut had gone fuzzy after a long shift, and his navy uniform shirt smelled of ambulance.
He had a broad flat chest and a tan line at the neck.
He also said "yes, ma'am" to me, and I had not yet bothered to fight it.
"I should wash first," he said in the hall. "I've been in people's houses all day."
"Then wash," I said. "I'm coming."
He laughed.
He thought I was joking.
The bathroom was tiny and yellow, with a plastic curtain printed with fish and a shower head bolted too low for him.
The water came on loud and ran hot in a minute, and the mirror fogged over while we undressed.
I took his shirt off his shoulders myself and found bruises on his forearms where someone had grabbed him.
"A patient," he said. "He didn't mean it."
"I'll be gentle," I said, and he gave me a tired, crooked, delighted look.
We stepped in together.
The tub was a tight fit, and the water ran down both of us, hot enough to turn my skin pink and his skin red.
He leaned his forehead against the tile with his eyes closed and let it beat on his neck.
"Oh my God," he said. "That's the best thing that's happened today."
"I'll try to beat it."
I took the bar of soap off the shelf.
It was plain white soap, and I worked it between my palms into a slick lather.
I started at his shoulders and worked down.
I soaped the long muscles of his back, the small of it, and the two dimples above his ass.
