Chapter 20: The Hood
Every head in the Hall turned to me.
The guild master looked up from the ledger under the chief's hand.
"Gray Knife," he said slowly. "Answer him."
Behind me, Tobiah had stopped breathing again.
Kell had stepped up to my shoulder without a sound.
I could feel the Hall's men moving at the edges of the room, closing on the door.
Brannon stood at the end of the Ridge bench.
So he'd told her. After my yard, he'd walked back to the meadow and told her.
Hester saw me see it, and her smile got wider.
"Take it off," a Ridge wolf shouted. "Let's see the washerwoman."
"Take it off!"
Hall's men started toward me through the crowd.
I didn't wait for them.
I reached up and pulled the string under my chin.
I took the gray hood off with my own hands, and I let it fall on the floor at my feet.
The stamping stopped.
The plain face, the light-brown braid, the scar on my chin.
The face that had stood behind Brannon at a dozen Ridge fires, holding the stew pot.
Somebody whispered "a woman" and it ran around the walls like wind through dry grass.
