Chapter 26: The Long Night
Twenty-two teams went up the river trail under that moon.
We walked near the back.
Kell kept pace beside me and complained about the walk the whole way.
I laughed until the fox tanner told us both to shut up.
Tobiah flew above us, a dark shape against the stars.
The old hunter rode on the sled with the ropes and the cores, pulled by the bull champion's team, who'd offered.
At the valley mouth, the steam rose white out of the black rock.
The old hunter climbed down off the sled and planted his torch in the snow.
"This is my camp," he said. "Bring me a pig."
I went to the mouth of the steam caves first.
The big cave, the one Old Frost used.
There were bristles in the mud at the entrance, white and as long as my arm. The snow was churned to slush.
The tracks went out, and up.
"He's gone up the valley," I said. "Tonight. Not an hour ago."
"Why?" Kell said. "It's the coldest night of the year. He should be lying in the water."
