Chapter 27: The Ravine

He didn't make a sound.

He just went down into the black with the cut rope trailing after him, and then I couldn't see him at all.

I heard him hit.

A soft, heavy sound, a long way down.

"Kell!"

Nothing came back up.

On the near side, Brannon was already gone into the dark.

And Old Frost stood at the lip of the ravine, twenty paces from me across the gap.

He was broadside to me.

His blind left side was turned my way, the gray ruined eye, the black saddle of the burn.

One throw.

I had my knife in my hand. I didn't remember drawing it.

One throw, behind the left foreleg where the hide was thin, and the Long Night was mine.

The Charter. The board. All of it.

Below me, in the dark, there was no sound at all.

I put the knife back in my belt.

I went down on my knees at the far pine, where the rope was still knotted, and started hauling up the slack.

It was long enough. Just.

"Toby!"

He was there before I finished his name, dropping out of the sky in a burst of red feathers.
