Chapter 28: Old Frost
Down here he was bigger.
He filled the ravine, bristles scraping both walls, his breath rolling ahead of him in clouds.
His left eye was a gray ruin.
His right eye was half shut and bleeding where Tobiah had raked it at the narrows.
He lowered his snout to the snow and breathed us in.
He came at a walk.
"Willa," Kell said behind me. "Get up the rope."
"No."
"I can't run."
"I know."
"Then go."
"I let him go once tonight." I didn't look round. "I'm not doing it twice."
Behind me, I heard Kell drag himself out of the mud.
"The old man said he hates fire," Kell said. His voice was stronger. The warm water had done that. "And he hates a snake worse."
"You've got a broken leg."
"A snake doesn't have legs."
I looked back.
He was half sitting in the wallow, white-faced, his teeth set.
And then he wasn't.
The black coils poured out of the mud and over the rocks, slow, so slow, but there.
Old Frost stopped dead.
