Chapter 16: The Pack Splits
By sunrise the recording had been played in every house in the valley.
Fourteen minutes of my brother's voice, my father's confession and my own "No," sent from one number to four packs at once.
Black Creek's wolves stood in the yard in their coats, and nobody spoke to me.
They looked.
It was not the look I knew from Ironwood.
The broad woman with the shaved head came across the mud, handed me a mug of tea and stood next to me.
"Black," she said. "The way you take it."
Then one of the gate guards began shouting.
"Riders on the road. Ironwood colours."
Thirty came up the drive in the rain, on foot and in trucks, with no weapons showing.
The man in front was the big one I had seen hauled up the bank at the south ford.
His coat was still stained with river clay.
He stopped at the gate and took off his cap.
"I'm one of the six," he said. "My name doesn't matter. I came to say it to your face."
"Say what?"
"Thank you for the rope. And I'm sorry for the hunting."
He looked behind him.
"The hall's split down the middle. Half of us want Colt gone before supper. The other half want it proved. Nobody wants the woman running the hall."
"Cassia," I said.
"She stood in front of the Long Hall at dawn with the ring in her hand and said she was keeping the pack calm until the Moot." He turned his cap over. "Nobody asked her to."
Jonas said, low, "She's moving fast."
