Chapter 16: The Account
The Ryerson boardroom had eleven leather chairs, a table of black glass, and a gray morning pressing on the windows.
On Tuesday at eight, ten of the chairs held directors and one held Margaret.
I stood behind her left shoulder, because she had told me to and nobody else had the nerve to say otherwise.
Desmond sat at the foot of the table with Ford a pace behind him and his face as flat as a closed ledger.
"Ms. Rowe is my guest," Margaret said, to the room in general. "If anyone objects, I'll hear him at the door."
Nobody did.
A director with a silver tie pin cleared his throat and picked up a single sheet of letterhead.
"This is a demand from Thorsby Capital, delivered yesterday at six," he said. "It calls the construction loan on this hotel."
"Forty-one million dollars, payable in thirty days."
