Chapter 19: Her Rules
He closed the door without a sound.
The latch clicked, and the whole dark room seemed to lean toward us.
"Rules," I said, very low. "One. Nobody speaks above a whisper."
"Understood."
"Two. You don't touch me until I say."
His eyes went to my mouth.
"That is going to be difficult," he said.
"Three. You do what I tell you, and you do it slowly."
"Yes, ma'am."
I stood over the daybed in my T-shirt and nothing else, and I watched his breath change.
"Take it off," I said, and pointed at his shirt.
He pulled it over his head.
The moon laid a long bar of silver across his chest, across the scar on his ribs, and I put my palm flat on it.
He held very still.
I could feel his heart working under my hand.
"Lie back."
He lay back against the quilt, and the old frame creaked.
I took the scarf off the sewing machine and wound it twice around his wrists.
Then I looped the ends through the iron rail of the headboard.
"Is that tight?" I whispered.
