Chapter 23: Lights On

He didn't make it past the door.

The loft was dim and cold, and smelled of cedar, and the iron stairs were still ringing behind us.

I pushed him against the wood before he had turned the lock.

"Lana."

"No more rules."

"I've been waiting twelve weeks for you to say that."

"Then stop waiting."

He kissed me hard.

His hands went to the buttons of my coat and then to my hair, and he lifted me off the floor.

I wrapped my legs around his waist and we crossed the room that way.

Shoes, my coat and his jacket fell behind us on the floor.

He set me down on the worktable and stepped between my knees.

"Lights on," I said.

He flicked the lamp over the bench.

It threw a warm yellow circle around us.

"All of it," I said. "I want to see you."

"I'm not much to see."

"Mitchell."

He took off his shirt.

His chest was broad and scarred in two places, and the bruise on his arm had gone yellow.

I put my palms on him and felt the heat come up through his skin.

"I've waited a long time to look at you in the light," I said.

He swallowed.

I unbuttoned my blouse and let it fall, and then my bra, and he looked at me.

Slowly.

All the way along.

"You're so beautiful it's stupid," he said.

"Stop talking."

"Make me."

I kissed him.

I pulled him down against me and ran my nails along his back, and he groaned into my mouth.

He slid my skirt up and drew my underwear down, and I kicked it away.

His fingers found me, wet and ready.

"You want this?" he said.

"I want everything."

He lowered his head and took my nipple between his teeth.
