Chapter 24: Gate Four

Six weeks after the premiere, Snow Line had been on the air for four of them.

Wanning came through Gate Four on a cold morning.

She wore a new grey coat and carried a notebook under her arm.

The sentries at the barrier did not ask for her pass.

They stood straighter, and the younger one grinned.

"Morning, Madam Ji."

"Morning. It's still Qiao on the door of my office."

"Yes, Madam Ji."

She gave up.

Beside the booth the base dog lay in a patch of weak sun.

Its bad leg was stretched out in front of it.

It lifted its head when it smelled her pockets, and thumped its tail once.

"I know," she said, and gave it the end of a steamed bun.

Behind her the green car pulled up, with Luo at the wheel.

Ji Suwen sat in the back seat, clutching a covered pot.

"Soup," Ji Suwen announced, stepping out. "For the writing room. Writers need broth."

"Auntie, we have a kitchen."

"You have a kitchen that makes noodles. A person cannot live on noodles."

"He does."

"He is not a person," said Ji Suwen fondly. "He is a captain."

Luo was already unloading the trunk of the car, and talking.

"The colonel has said the second series is approved, Madam."

"The investors have sent a hamper of oranges."
