Chapter 7: Who Has a Key

By Saturday noon, Luo Qiang had changed her lock.

He did it before lunch with a borrowed drill and a great deal of commentary.

"Whoever had that key is going to hate this one, miss. It has a brass cylinder. I picked it out myself."

"Thank you, Luo."

"The captain paid. I only chose it. Please tell him I chose it well."

Wanning stood in her doorway with her laptop bag over one shoulder and the ten notebooks in a sports bag at her feet.

Captain Ji stood on the landing, looking at the bag.

"You'll stay in the guest block on the base until the colonel has seen your drafts on Monday," he said. "The colonel has agreed. It is a matter of the series' security."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

"Is that your real reason?"

He considered it with total seriousness.

"Your folder was emptied from the inside, and a notebook was taken with a key," he said. "I would like you to be somewhere with a gate."

It was hard to argue with that.

In the car she called Wen Zhe, and he answered on the second ring, bright and wary.

"Ning! I was about to call you."

"Did you come into my flat?"

A pause. "What?"

"The oldest notebook is gone. Nobody broke in. Somebody used a key."

"I lost mine months ago," he said gently. "Ning, are you all right? You sound so tired. You're seeing enemies everywhere, and I only want to help."
