Chapter 21: No Clock
Ji-seok made the bed with Si-woo's mother's sheets.
He did it with the care of a man defusing a bomb, tucking each hospital corner flat with the side of his hand.
The mattress was bare no longer.
Clean white cotton, warm from her dryer, smelling of lemon soap.
It lay in the middle of his hushed empty bedroom, with its brand new window and its forty floors of sky.
Si-woo stood in the doorway with his shoes in his hand and watched Ji-seok smooth the last wrinkle out.
"Is it right?" Ji-seok said.
"It's perfect."
"She'll check."
"She'll check by Sunday."
Ji-seok straightened up.
He was still in his black coat, with the gold steady under his skin.
The room's single lamp threw his shadow up the wall.
Si-woo put his shoes down.
"Take off your coat," he said.
Ji-seok took it off.
"All of it."
Ji-seok undressed in the lamplight without hurry, folding each piece and setting it on the chair.
He had stopped hiding from Si-woo.
Si-woo noticed that.
Ji-seok stood naked with his hands loose at his sides.
The scars across his ribs and his hip showed pale against his skin.
He did not look away once.
Si-woo took his own clothes off after him, shirt and then trousers.
The air touched his bare back, and he felt nothing but air.
"Look at me," Si-woo said.
Ji-seok looked.
"Not a thing on it," Si-woo said. "Not a mark. It's just a back."
"It's the best thing I've ever seen."
"Don't be corny."
"I'm not." Ji-seok swallowed. "I want to touch it."
"Ask properly."
"May I?"
"Yes."
Ji-seok crossed the floor and put both hands on Si-woo's shoulder blades, spread wide and warm.
