Chapter 7: Dinner

Si-woo did not tell him.

He had thirty-one percent and about nineteen weeks, and a man who had never once been touched without bracing.

If he said the word holder, Ji-seok would stop.

He would stop that same night, and some A-rank would take over his arms, and it would be the basement all over again.

So Si-woo kept his shirt on and his back to the wall.

He told himself it was only a few weeks.

Two weeks later it was April, and Ji-seok was cooking.

"You don't have to do this," Si-woo said from the stool at the counter.

"I live here."

"You've never used that stove."

"I used it last week."

"You boiled water, and you cracked the countertop."

"The countertop was already cracked."

"By you."

Ji-seok turned from the pan with a wooden spoon in his fist and a look of pure injured dignity.

His hair was tied low, and his sleeves were pushed up over forearms Si-woo could have drawn from memory.

He wore an apron with a cartoon bear on it.

Ga-eul had left it on his doorknob as a joke, and he had put it on without a word.

"Sit still," Ji-seok said. "It's almost done."

It was not almost done.

It was a stew with a black bottom and a raw top.

He set a bowl in front of Si-woo with such care that Si-woo ate every bite.
