Six of the Marshal's guards stepped toward me with their hands open.
Aldric moved before I did.
He walked between them and me and stopped, and the nearest guard walked into his chest.
"No," he said.
It was a quiet word.
In a yard of three hundred soldiers it carried like a shot.
"Commander." The Marshal's voice did not rise. "That was an order."
"I heard it, sir."
"Then obey it."
"No."
I had never heard a man say that word to Hadrian Crane.
I could tell nobody else had either, because the soldiers had stopped breathing.
Orrin walked out of the line and stood at Aldric's shoulder.
He did not say anything.
He did not need to.
Behind us, Finola picked up a bucket and said, "Biscuit, if they touch her, you have my blessing."
Biscuit, on the far side of the gate, laid her ears flat.
The Marshal looked at the three of us.
