Chapter 15: The Cut
The kitchen smelled of burnt sugar and something bitter underneath it.
The witch sat on a stool by the stove with her hands folded.
Two of the Marshal's guards stood behind her, and she looked at me with her one clouded eye and did not blink.
"Sit, Miss Wakefield," said Crane. "You have had a long day."
"I'll stand."
"Then at least have a cup."
He filled one and slid it across the table toward me.
The steam rose in a thin white thread.
Sabine was at my elbow.
She took the cup out of my fingers before I could reach for it, and held it under her nose.
"Uncle," she said. "This smells of almonds."
The room went quiet.
"Put it down, Sabine."
"Why does the tea smell of almonds?"
"Because it is a good tea."
"I did not make that tea," said the witch, mildly. "I would not, child."
Crane did not look at her.
He looked at his niece for a very long time, with the same face he had worn when he cut his meat at supper.
"I see you have been talking to the hauler."
"I have been talking to myself," said Sabine, "which is worse."
