Chapter 17: The Witch's Price
The captain's riders took us to a relay hall a mile up the road.
It was a long stone barn with a hearth at one end, a plank table, and no fire.
Finola lit one before anyone asked her to.
By the time the flames caught, the witch had my boot off and my trouser leg slit to the knee.
The bolt had gone through the meat of the calf and out the other side.
She washed it with something that smelled of vinegar and mint, and I held on to the edge of the table.
Aldric knelt on the floor beside me with my hand in both of his.
"Tell me how it feels," he said.
"Like a hot nail."
"Where?"
"Don't you start. I'm not in the mood to describe it."
"I am not asking for the wound," he said. "I am asking for your face."
"My face is fine."
"Your face is grey, and you are biting the inside of your cheek."
"Yes," I admitted. "That too."
The witch tied off the last stitch, and sat back on her heels, and did not look at either of us.
"I owe you the truth," she said. "It is not a good one."
