Chapter 18: Night in the Cold Hall

The hall had a loft over the stable end, with straw, a heap of wagon blankets and a view of the road.

The others bedded down below, around the fire, and nobody asked where we were going.

Aldric carried me up the ladder one-handed, because my leg would not take the rungs.

He laid me down on the blankets and knelt over me in the dark.

His breath showed in the cold, and I could feel it, and I could feel him feeling it.

"I have a rule tonight," I said.

"I am listening."

"The bond doesn't get a vote."

I put my palm flat on his chest.

"Tomorrow it may be gone, and I want to know that whatever happens up here, I asked for it with my own mouth."

"I'm twenty-five years old, I've got a hole in my leg, and I want you. Not the thing between us. You."

"I am thirty-two," he said, and his voice shook.

"I want you with the bond and without it."

"I have been cold on this floor for an hour, and I can feel it."

"I want you more than I want to be warm."

"Then come here," I said.

He kissed me.

It was slow and rough, and he tasted of smoke.

I felt his lips on mine, and I felt mine on his.

He drew back, startled.

"Is it always so loud?"

"Not usually. You're getting your own half back."
