Chapter 14: Blow-Dryer

"Don't hang up," I said. "Put me in your pocket."

"Already there, babe."

I heard fabric rustle, and then the room got muffled and close.

I ran down the stairs with my keys in my teeth.

Luciano's driver was washing the black car in the garage.

He took one look at me and opened the passenger door.

"Fishtown," I said. "Fast."

He didn't ask.

He just drove.

From the apron pocket I could hear the salon radio playing something from the eighties.

I could hear scissors.

Bernie was actually cutting his hair.

"A little off the back," Raimondo said. "I like it neat. My wife says I look like a priest."

"Your wife's a kind woman."

"She is, sweetheart. She is."

Snip.

Snip.

"Nice place," he said. "Two chairs. That window. You must do very well."

"I do okay."

"The rent must be terrible on Frankford Avenue."

Snip.

"It's fine."

"Is it?" He turned a page. "Who's your landlord, Bernadette?"

The scissors stopped.

"A company," Bernie said. "On Passyunk."

"A company on Passyunk," he repeated, very fondly. "Do you ever wonder who's in that company?"

On Lincoln Drive the driver went around a bus on the wrong side of the line.

I held the dashboard and didn't breathe.

"Your lease is up in December," Raimondo said. "I looked. It would be a shame. A girl works so hard, builds a little business with her own two hands. And then one day it's a nail place."

"Are you threatening my salon?"

"I'm admiring it. I'm telling you what I see."

Snip.

"Your cousin married into our family. That's lovely. That's family. But family has to be careful who it talks to. Who it lets read. If your cousin was a bit more careful, I'd never even think about leases."

"You want me to make her stop writing."
