Chapter 17: Live

"Where will you go?" I said.

Shelby turned around with the broom in her fist.

"Don't you dare," she said. "Don't you dare feel sorry for me, Liza Gatling."

She threw the broom down in the buttercream and walked out between the crew.

Nobody stopped her.

I found out where she went eight days later, at seven in the morning, when Emmy called me screaming.

"Turn on channel five. Turn it on, turn it on."

I didn't have a TV. Hayes had one, a little one on top of his fridge.

Shelby was on a cream sofa on a morning show set, in pale pink, her hair perfect again.

"So, Shelby. You say there's more to the 'wrong bride' story than people know."

"So much more." Shelby dabbed under one eye. "I didn't want to say it. I've protected her for months. But Liza was sleeping with Trey's brother before the wedding."

I set my coffee down very carefully on the counter.

"For a year," Shelby went on. "Everybody in the family knew. I stepped in at that altar to save Trey from marrying a cheater. And now she's living with the brother on his boat like nothing happened."

Hayes stood behind me in his boxers, a dish towel in his hand.

"Where's that studio?" he said.

"Upper King. Ten minutes."

"Six," he said. "If I drive like you."

The segment ran until seven forty. We walked in at seven thirty-one.

Hayes's whole crew came behind us in their work clothes.

They'd been at the yard early for a haul and piled into the truck bed when they saw us running.

A girl with a headset tried to stop us in the hall.

Then she recognized me, and her face lit up, and she walked us straight to the edge of the set herself.

"Go," she whispered. "Please go."

Shelby was mid-sentence.

"...the rehearsal dinner, actually. They snuck off together during the toasts..."
