Chapter 25: The Mill

Two varsity boys took my arms.

They marched me down the lake path and shoved me in.

Somebody had put the hinge pins back and added a chain and a second padlock.

The sawdust was wet and freezing.

Cold was the oldest trick there was.

I sat against the stone and held my wolf all night.

At midnight something scratched on the back wall.

There was a vent up near the roof, a slot the size of a letter box.

"Rainier."

"Coach."

"I can have that door off in ten seconds."

"Then every Alpha who reads your letters hears the deposed Alpha broke out the thief." I leaned my head on the stone. "Don't."

"I went down the river after dark," he said. "Two hundred yards out, one of them stood up and sniffed. A wolf can't get near."

"I can."

"The ring dulls me to an omega. I smell like a mop. Nobody stands up for a mop."

"You're locked in an ice house."

"Not tomorrow night," I said.

I told him the plan through the slot in the wall.

"How do you know they'll get you out?" he said.
