Chapter 9: Caught

Neither of us moved.

Rain ran off his hair and down his jaw.

The gold in his eyes spread until the brown was just a ring around it.

"Put it down," he said.

I put the letter down on the desk.

He came into the room and shut the door behind him.

The lock clicked.

He walked to the desk.

I stood up out of his chair, because I don't sit when someone comes at me.

That put me between him and the desk with nowhere to go.

He put both hands flat on the wood, one on each side of me.

He didn't touch me.

He didn't have to.

He was wet and warm and so close I could feel the heat coming off his chest through my jacket.

"What are you doing in my office, Rainier?"

My wolf came up so fast the ring bit my thumb.

She didn't want to fight him.

That was the problem.

"Stealing food," I said.

He looked at the drawer.

The half-eaten protein bar sat on top of the pens.

"Food."

"They feed us chili. Every day. Chili. I smelled peanut butter."

"Through a locked door."

"I've got a good nose."

"And the letter?"

"It was under the protein bar."

"It was in the second drawer."

"I was thorough."

His mouth moved. He made it stop.

He leaned in another inch.

I could see the rain on his eyelashes and a small white scar through his left eyebrow.

I could hear his heart.

It was going as fast as mine.

"You read it," he said.

"I read it."

"All of it."

His eyes dropped to my mouth.

Stayed there.

My back was against the desk. His arms were a cage I could have walked out of. I didn't.
