Chapter 20: Integrity

Kessling spoke for six minutes about integrity.

He used the word four times.

Eli counted, standing at the edge of the dance floor with Gabe's hand around his, and by the fourth he had stopped being afraid.

"A teaching hospital is a promise," Kessling said into the microphone. "It promises every patient that the person who holds a scalpel has earned the right to hold it."

Applause rippled, polite and thin.

"I have been honored to serve as acting lead of our residency teaching group in a difficult season. It would be easy to pretend that difficulty was not real."

He lifted one hand toward the back of the room.

"I'd like to show you what I mean."

The lights went down.

On the screen behind him a still image appeared, and the whole ballroom saw a man on a table with a forearm across his eyes.

Somebody gasped.

Eli did not move.

He felt Gabe go rigid beside him, and he squeezed his hand until the knuckles ground together.

"This was recorded in our own teaching room," Kessling said gravely. "I am sorry to bring it here. But a program that hides its failures..."

"Dr. Kessling."

The chair had come up the stairs of the stage.

She did not run.

She took the microphone out of his hand.

"Thank you," she said, and her voice filled the ballroom. "I'll take it from here."

"Madam Chair, I wasn't finished."
