Chapter 21: Reinstated
Eli had read the letter in the car on Friday night, under the dome light, and then he had refused to talk about it for two days.
Now he sat on a bench outside the chair's office on Monday morning with his arms folded.
Gabe sat beside him in the navy sweater and the white coat, which he was not technically allowed to wear.
"You don't have to come in," Gabe said.
"I'm coming in."
"I wrote it before the gala. I didn't know it would go the way it did."
"You wrote it so you could pay for me with your job."
Gabe did not answer.
"I'm not a bill," Eli said.
The door opened, and the chair's delegate in her gray suit looked out.
"Dr. Kelleher. Mr. Winslow. She'll see you both."
The chair sat behind her desk with a cup of tea and the same cardigan.
She did not ask them to sit.
"The board met this morning at seven," she said. "Dr. Kessling is gone. His foundation has been referred to university counsel, and the resident who spoke up keeps his fellowship, with an apology."
"Good," Gabe said.
"Dr. Kelleher, I have a problem."
"I know."
"Do you."
"You can't put me back at the head of a teaching group when my partner was the volunteer." Gabe drew the folded letter from his pocket and set it on her desk. "I'm resigning the lead. I'll teach under whoever you appoint. I'd like to see the volunteer rules fixed, if you'll let me."
The chair looked at the letter and did not touch it.
