Chapter 24: Knees Up
Eleven residents filed into the teaching room at nine sharp, and Eli Winslow stood at the front of it with a clipboard.
He had written the lesson himself.
It had taken six weeks of nights at the kitchen table in Squirrel Hill, and Gabe had read every page and corrected two commas.
The brass plate on the door still said Kelleher.
Under it, on a strip of tape, somebody had written Winslow in marker.
Tom Dunn sat in the back row with a fresh stack of pins on his lanyard.
Gabe sat in the third row in a gray suit, with his reading glasses pushed up into his hair.
Eli looked at him once and had to look away, because Gabe was already watching him and had not stopped.
He had sat in the third row at graduation and looked at his hands.
Now he looked at nothing else.
"Good morning," Eli said. "I'm Eli Winslow, and I'm the new volunteer coordinator for this program."
Nobody laughed.
A woman in the second row began to write.
"Today's volunteer is a twenty-six-year-old nursing student. He's signed a consent form and he's read the ground rules. He knows he can stop us at any point, for any reason, and that he can call me or the chair on a number printed on his card."
He held up the card.
"There are no phones in this room. Every device is in the box by the door. I checked."
A few people shifted.
"You'll ask before you touch him," Eli said. "He is a patient. He is not a prop."
In the third row Gabe closed his eyes and smiled.
The session went well.
The volunteer was funny and nervous and knew when to say so, and the residents were gentler than Eli had expected.
