Chapter 26: The Room Turns
The ballroom went silent.
Four hundred people turned in their chairs to look at the back table.
Magnus didn't move.
"I was there," Randall said into the mic. He was breathing hard. "The night they met. The night they never met, he'd have you believe. She walks out of his back hallway at five to eight with her lipstick gone and her hair a mess. Ten minutes later he walks out of the same hallway fixing his tie."
A woman near the stage put down her fork.
"So ask him," Randall said. "Ask the great chef what he did to my niece in his washroom."
Every face in the room swung toward Magnus.
I knew what he wanted to do.
He wanted to get up and walk out so the cameras would follow him and not me.
He'd done it in my kitchen.
He'd done it on TV.
He stood up.
He didn't walk anywhere.
He stood at the back of the room with his hands at his sides and let them look at him.
He stood in the room.
I walked over to my uncle.
He was still holding the mic.
