I went down the stairs in my jeans and one of Cruz's shirts, with my hair still full of snow.
The front door stood open.
Cold air came down the hall, and through it I could see the long portal, and the people standing on it.
There were a lot of them.
Doña Cirila stood at the center in her black coat with her cane planted.
Beside her stood two elders I had seen at the fiesta.
One was an old man in a gray hat.
The other was a small, hard-faced woman with a rosary around her wrist.
Behind them, in a half circle on the packed snow of the yard, stood the young wolves of the pack.
There were more than a dozen, men and women in canvas coats, with their hands loose at their sides.
They watched me come out.
Nobody smiled.
Amador stood at the end of the portal with his hat in both hands.
