Chapter 14: The Guard Station

He had the stove roaring and my jacket off before the snow melted in my hair.

The guard station was one room of logs with a tin roof and a bunk with a bare mattress.

A braided rug lay in front of the stove.

It was ten degrees outside.

I did not feel it, because I was crying, and he was kissing the tears off my face.

"Look at me," he said.

"I can't stop."

"Then don't stop. Look at me."

I looked.

His eyes were gold all the way across, and his hands were shaking on my jaw.

"You gave up the seat," I said.

"I did."

"For a woman who didn't trust you."

"For a woman who got into my truck," he said, and he kissed me.

It was a hard kiss, open and hungry, and I had both fists in his shirt.

I got it over his head.

He pulled my sweater off and then the thermal under it, and the heat of the stove hit my bare back.

He laid me down on the rug.

The wool was rough under my shoulder blades and warm from the fire.

He knelt over me and unhooked my bra with two fingers and looked.

"I want it to be slow," he said. "I want to do this right, in a bed."

"There's no bed yet."

"Then on the floor."

I took his face in my hands and kissed him until neither of us could talk.

He tasted of snow and smoke.

I lifted my hips, and his hand slid under me and squeezed my ass hard, and I moaned into his mouth.

"Cruz," I said. "I don't want it slow."

His breath caught.

"I want to feel it tomorrow," I said. "I want to feel it in the truck. Don't be careful with me."

He put his mouth on my breast and sucked hard.

His hand cupped the other one, and his thumb dragged across the nipple until it ached.

I reached down and found him through his jeans, long and hot and straining.

"Take those off," I said.

"Not yet."

"Now."

He laughed against my skin and sucked harder, and I stopped arguing.

I arched off the rug and pushed my fingers into his hair.
