I left while she slept, and I left a note on the table in my own square hand.
Back by morning. C.
It was the second note I had ever left her, and I hated it as much as the first.
The Westbrook ranch sat forty miles north in Colfax County, behind a steel gate with a steer skull welded to the top.
It was one in the morning on the twenty-second of December.
A light burned in the kitchen.
Her father was at the table in his gray hat, with a ledger open and a cup of cold coffee.
He did not look surprised to see me.
He did not get up.
"Sit," he said. "You're the Montoya boy who isn't one anymore."
"Yes, sir."
I sat.
"My daughter says you've been run out of your own house for a girl," he said.
"I walked out of it," I said.
