Chapter 7: The Chile Roast

Lola's POV

By eleven the last truck had left the field, and the whole valley smelled of roasting chile.

Six propane roasters stood in a row in the dark.

Their steel cages were still turning, blistering the last pods with a roar of blue flame.

Smoke lay over everything.

It was in my hair, my clothes, my skin, and the burlap sacks stacked on the flatbed truck behind me.

"Nobody can smell anything tonight," Cruz had said at supper, looking at his plate.

"Not even a wolf?"

"Not a wolf, not a dog, not Cirila."

He had said it to his plate, and I had understood him perfectly.

Now he stood at the tailgate, shutting off the last roaster, and the field went from roar to hush.

The cages spun down.

The only light came from the cab of the truck, a yellow glow across the sacks.

He turned.

"We should stack these," he said.

"We should."

"Lola," he said.

"Come here."

He crossed the dirt.

I met him halfway, took his face in both hands, and kissed him.

He tasted of smoke and green chile and the cold beer he had been pretending to drink.

His hands went to my waist, and he lifted me onto the tailgate.

I locked my legs around him.

"Three weeks since the spring," I said, between kisses.

"I know. I counted again."

"Stop counting," I said.

"I can't."

I tugged his shirt out of his jeans.

I put my hands flat against his stomach and felt the muscles jump.

He pulled my T-shirt over my head and unhooked my bra.

He kissed my collarbone, my breast, and the burn scar on my arm, one soft kiss at a time.

"You're so beautiful in this light," he said.

"It's a truck's dome light."

"I don't care."

I pushed his shirt up and off over his head and dropped it in the dirt.

Then I put my mouth on his chest.

I licked a slow path across it, over the muscle and the black hair, and I closed my teeth lightly on his nipple.

He swore, and his hips rocked into mine.

I bit his earlobe.

I dragged my nails down his stomach.
