Chapter 10: Her Terms

Linnea's POV

I woke with sunlight on the quilt and my husband's arm across my waist.

For one second I forgot everything.

Then I remembered the tea, and the Concord, and the three of them, and I lay there with my hand on my stomach and said it out loud, quietly.

"I'm going back."

Ambrose's arm tightened.

"I know," he said into my hair. "I felt you decide at five o'clock."

"You were awake?"

"I haven't slept since Tuesday."

I rolled over.

He looked terrible, and he looked like mine.

"I'm not going back to be cut loose," I said. "I'm going back so she has to say it to my face. Where everyone can hear. A year of tea, Ambrose. A year of Cressida at that table telling me I was empty, with a smile."

"She'll deny it."

"I have a blood panel with her silver in it. I have a diner full of witnesses and a waitress who filmed the whole thing. I have June."

"Do you have a plan for her answer?"

"I have a plan to hand her a cup of tea," I said, "and watch her face."

He laughed, a short startled sound, and I realized I hadn't heard him laugh in months.

"You'd do it."

"In front of everyone."

"Then I'll stand behind you," Ambrose said, "and keep quiet until you want me to speak."

"You'll stay quiet?"

"For you? Yes. I've been told I'm good at it."

I pressed my forehead against his.

The stairs creaked.

June stood in the doorway with a mug in each hand, her scrubs still on from the night shift, and she looked at the floor, at the bed, at the three buttons by the dresser, and at Ambrose's bare shoulder.
