Chapter 24: Mrs. Hargrove

The officiant did it in four minutes, and he didn't take a tip.

He read the vows with his hands shaking, and he looked Lucas in the eye for the whole of them.

"I do," I said, before he finished the question.

"I do," said Lucas, a half second later.

"I wanted to be first," I said.

"You were," he said.

"I'll let you have the next ten thousand."

The officiant signed the new certificate with a pen that skipped, and slid it across the little table.

"For the record," he said, with a very small smile, "I'd like to be thanked for not being drunk at this one."

"Thank you," said Lucas gravely.

"You're welcome."

"Please don't come back."

It was ten past four when we reached the Aurelian.

Lucas stopped behind me, and he didn't touch me.

"This is where I woke up," I said.

"I know."

"I'd like to wake up here again."

"I'd like to do something about the part before."

He laughed, low and rough, and I turned around and pushed him against the door.

I took the tie off him.

It was the dark blue one, and I wound it once around my fist.

"You're not going to stop me this time," I said.

"I wouldn't dream of it."

His hands found the zipper of the white dress and drew it down slowly, and the cloth slid off my shoulders and pooled on the carpet.
