Chapter 16: The Back Seat

The van smelled of cigarettes and wet wool.

They put me on the bench seat with a man on each side, and Crowe slid in across from me.

He shut the door himself, gently.

"Please don't make a scene," he said. "I'd hate for anyone to be hurt."

"You already shot my patient."

"I shot at you. Your patient is very quick."

He smiled and patted my knee.

I did not move.

"I like that you count, Miss Hallett," Crowe said. "You're a careful woman, so you'll understand this."

He pulled a phone from his pocket and showed me the screen.

It was a photograph of my father, asleep in his hospital bed, taken from the door.

"I could have walked in there," Crowe said. "Instead, I walked in here. That's a kindness. I'd like you to remember it."

The van pulled out into traffic.

I counted the turns.

Left onto Carnegie, right on East Ninth, left toward the lake.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"The same thing as before. A phone call. The night he falls."

"I told you no."
