Chapter 12: Who's the Boss Now

Quentin's hand stopped on my hair.

"Then what is it?" he asked.

"Hartigan."

He didn't move.

"Livia Hartigan," I said. "The old man was my grandfather."

The room was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

He sat up slowly and looked at me.

Then he looked at my wrist, and the steel watch on it, and I saw him turn the case in his mind and read the back of it again.

W.H.

"The watch," he said.

"He wore it every day for fifty years. It's the only thing of his they gave me."

"Hartigan." He repeated it slowly. "The board has been looking for you since June."

"I know."

"They have a lawyer's letter. They have a name and nothing else. Not a photograph, not an address."

"My mother stopped speaking to him before I was eight," I said. "She took us back to her own name. I've been Livia Doyle on every form since second grade."

"And the job?"

"I took it so nobody would know me."

I sat up with the sheet around me and pulled my knees to my chest.

"He died, and the board went on voting like he'd never lived. I wanted to see who they were before I told them who I was. I wanted to know who forced him out of his own building in his last year."
