Chapter 13: Say It Properly
Quentin was dressed when I woke up.
He stood at the bedroom window in a white shirt and gray trousers, with a cup of coffee he hadn't touched.
"Good morning, Ms. Hartigan," he said.
I sat up with the sheet under my arms.
"No."
"I thought you'd want the correct form of address."
"I want my name in your mouth the way it was last night. Not the formal version."
He turned from the window.
His face was polite and shut, and I hated it more than I had ever hated the glasses.
"You are the majority owner of this company," he said. "I've been telling you where to kneel for five weeks. I should take that seriously."
"Take it seriously, then. I'm giving you an order."
"Of course."
"Come here."
He crossed the room and stopped at the foot of the bed.
"Closer."
He came to the side of the bed.
"Now say what you actually want to say. Not what's correct."
His jaw worked.
Then he said, in a flat voice, "You left at four in the morning."
I went still.
"You took your shoes in your hand so the floor wouldn't creak. You left a mask on my pillow and no name. I called the caterer and the hotel and the man who rented out the ballroom. I looked for Gia for two days."
"Quentin."
"I sat in a board meeting on Monday and you walked in wearing glasses, and I thought: thank God. And then I thought, she'll do it again. She'll walk out the minute I stop giving orders. I have been giving orders for a month because I was afraid of what happens when I don't."
