Chapter 21: Midnight, December Fourteenth

Quentin's POV

I took her to dinner on her birthday, in a restaurant with windows on the street, and I asked for the table by the glass.

The hostess looked at me strangely, because I had never asked for a window in my life.

"People will see us," Livia said, with her hand in mine across the cloth.

"Yes."

"Quentin Stroud, at a window table, holding hands with the heir."

"I've waited long enough to be seen with you."

She smiled, and her eyes went bright, and she turned her face toward the glass as a couple passed on the sidewalk and glanced in.

She didn't look away from them.

I tracked the days on my fingers under the table.

Seven days of asking.

I had asked for every kiss, every button, every breath I took against her skin, and I had never once told her what to do.

I had thought it would be torture.

It had been the strangest week of my life, because each time she said yes, it had been something she chose, and I had learned the difference between taking and being given.

It had changed what I wanted.

I still wanted her under my hands, but I wanted to be a man she would say yes to for forty years.

At eleven she put down her fork.

"You're going quiet."

"I'm thinking."

"About what?"

"About whether I'm allowed to ask you something at midnight."
