Chapter 4: Who Asks About the Call

At nine fifty-five the next morning, Quentin walked out of his office with his coat over his arm and said he would be at a lunch until two.

He didn't look at me.

I hadn't slept, and my thighs still ached in a way I was trying very hard not to think about.

"Ms. Doyle, my line is yours until I'm back," he said, and left.

At nine fifty-eight, Merrick Elliston strolled up to my desk with two paper cups.

"Quentin's out? Good. I'll sit with you until he's back, so you're not alone with his phones."

"That's kind of you, Mr. Elliston."

"Merrick."

He handed me a cup and perched on the corner of my desk.

It was a caramel latte, and I hadn't told anyone I liked caramel.

I drank it anyway.

The line lit up at ten o'clock exactly.

I picked up, and a man's voice with no name said hello.

"This is Mr. Stroud's office," I said.

"I'm calling about the Denver figure he circled in the packet. Your friend on the floor said you'd be the one to ask."

"I'm sorry, which friend?"

The line went quiet for a moment.

"Never mind. I'll try again later."

He hung up.

I set the receiver down very gently.

"Who was that?" Merrick asked.

"Wrong number."

He smiled and sipped his coffee.

"Anyone calls about Denver, you send them to me. It's the sale everyone keeps asking about."

"I will."

When he had gone back down the hall, I looked at the packet on my own desk.
