Chapter 19: Grain Days
Grain Days filled the fairgrounds from the livestock barns to the grandstand, and half the county was in the bleachers by noon.
I sat in the third row with Dean on my left and Birdie on my right, and Dean's mother's ring sat on my finger in plain sight.
Nobody had mentioned it yet.
Several people had looked at it twice.
Down on the track, a tractor with a bunting of orange and green stood in front of the grandstand.
Orrin Lindqvist rode in the seat of it, in a sash that said GRAND MARSHAL, waving a big pink hand.
The crowd clapped for him.
Some of them didn't.
Kent stood on the platform beside the announcer's stand in a pressed blue shirt, with his sandy hair combed flat and a paper cup of lemonade.
He had not looked at me since he came up the steps.
"Ladies and gentlemen," said the announcer, who was Birdie's cousin and had been told to be careful. "Grain Days would like to thank our grand marshal for fifty years of service to this county."
Orrin took the microphone.
"This county takes care of its own," he said. "That's why I'm proud tonight to bring my son up here for a few words about family."
He handed the microphone to Kent.
Kent smiled out at the crowd.
"Thanks, Dad. Most of you know my fiancée lost her mother this year," he said.
Dean's hand closed over mine.
"I want to ask everybody to keep praying for her. She's been through so much, and I don't think she's making good choices. She's being taken advantage of by someone who should know better."
A murmur went through the bleachers.
Heads began to turn toward us.
"I'm not your fiancée," I said, but not loudly.
Birdie nudged me.
She was holding a phone cable in her left hand, and her eyes had gone very bright.
