Chapter 24: His Eyes
It was a plain gold band with one small stone.

"I couldn't find one that matched," Lawrence said. "This was the closest."
"Matched what?"
"Her."
His hand wasn't steady.
Behind us, two hundred and twenty people had stopped breathing on the benches.
"Six years ago I asked you in Hattie's bakery, over a cinnamon bun," he said. "You said yes with your mouth full."
"I remember."
"I'm asking again. On my father's dock. With everybody watching, so nobody ever gets to tell this town a different story."
"Mara Ellison. Will you marry me?"
I didn't get to answer first.
Feet came pounding down the dock behind us.
Poppy hit the boards at a run in her pink life jacket and paper hat.
She skidded to a stop beside Lawrence and grabbed his shoulder for balance.
"Is it a ring? Mama, is it a ring?"
"It's a ring, baby."
"Say yes!" She bounced on her toes. "Say yes, say yes, say yes."
