Chapter 19: The Will

The guards carried Florian inside on a cloak, with the King walking beside him.

The King didn't look at me as he passed.

But at the door he stopped.

"Whatever you are," he said without turning, "you have four days."

Then the door shut.

I spent the next day looking for an old man.

The foreman of the King's orchards had been retired for two years. Nobody at the palace knew where he lived. Nobody cared.

The baker's wife from our lane knew.

"Down past the tanneries," she said. "In the cottage with the grapevine. Take him something to eat. He forgets."

We found him on his bench under the vine, with a cup in his hand and his eyes half shut.

He was older than I remembered. Smaller. His hands shook.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Clemmie," he said at last. "You've got your father's chin."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true." He squinted past me at Cassian. "Good Lord. Who's the lion?"

"I'm marrying him," I said.

He took a long drink.

"Well," he said. "Your father always did say you'd do something odd."

I showed him the will.

He held it close to his face. His thumb went to the shaky capitals at the bottom, his own name.
